I had a car whose transmission was dieing, and the cost of even a rebuilt one was more than the car value. Then the windows fell into the door and wouldn't roll up. He didn't feel good to have me spend money on putting a $250 new part into a limited life car, so he "tinkered" with it (duct tape? , bailing wire?, paper clips?). He said he didn't know how long it would last, but he got it working. It lasted a year; the car lasted about 1 1/2 years.
